On our reading list: The Secret to Unlocking The Stress Cycle
In Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle, twin sisters Emily and Amelia Nagoski explain why modern women are exhausted and what to do about it. Drawing on science, they distinguish stressors from stress itself and offer practical tools to complete the stress cycl
- Dealing with the stressor is not the same as dealing with the stress. Removing the deadline, finishing the project, or resolving the conflict does not automatically discharge the physiological stress response your body has built up. Stress is a tunnel you have to move all the way through, not a switch you flip off.
- Complete the cycle with your body, not just your brain. The most effective ways to signal safety to your nervous system are physical: twenty minutes of movement, deep slow breathing, a long hug or six-second kiss, hearty laughter, a good cry, or creative expression. Thinking your way out of stress does not work; you have to act your way out.
- Human Giver Syndrome is the root of women’s burnout. The cultural expectation that women must be pretty, happy, calm, generous, and attentive to the needs of others—while denying their own—makes burnout structurally inevitable. Naming it is the first step in refusing it.
- Rest is productive, not optional. The Nagoskis recommend roughly 42% of your time devoted to rest, sleep, and recovery. Without it, performance, mood, immunity, and creativity all degrade. Rest is what makes the rest of life possible.
- Connection is biological infrastructure. Humans are not designed to handle stress alone. Trusted relationships, community, affection, and even brief moments of warmth with strangers help regulate the nervous system. Healing happens in the presence of others, and isolation deepens burnout rather than relieving it.
